Description / Expertise

D294. A relatively large and impressive (8.25" high overall) carriage clock, numbered 327,circa 1980, smothered in very fine quality champleve enamel. It strikes and repeats the hours on a bell and is provided with an alarm.

There are corinthian columns to the four corners decorated with enamelling and having gilded capitals. The enamelling even extends to the handle, the top of the case, the dial surround and the four sides of the base. A wide variety of colours are used including dark and light blue, greens, yellows, pinks and reds.

The main dial is beautifully executed with a light grey background and shaped white plaques bearing black roman numerals. To the centre is delicate gilt decoration. The alarm dial mimics the main dial. To all sides of the base is further enamelling. The clock rests on gilded feet. The centre sweep seconds hand is an attractive feature which usually indicates that the clock was made for the Chinese export market.

Ht with/without handle. 8.25"/6.75". (21/16cms.).
