28.25inch high 106.75inch wide 21.25inch deep (71.75 cm high 271.14 cm wide 53.97 cm deep) Exhibition HistoryA rare and wonderfully understated console in the Gustavian tradition. This scrub top trestle table has traces of original paint to the base, but really has more qualities in common with raw driftwood. Patinated and softened in form by years of use and scrubbing, it has taken on a lovely “silver” colour to the pine. The full length central stretcher has a vertical central support and the bearers have champhered edges to the underside. This piece is “softened with age” showing evidence of years of use and service on its skin. There are some minor shrinkage splits and incidental damages all commensurate with age and function that help lend the table its proud presence. There is a special dignity to well conceived pieces of rural furniture of this nature and this timeless example exhibits the strength of the principle that “less is more”, and we are attracted to its elegant simplicity.
