Maurice Frederick Codner 1888-1958. Born in Stoke Newington, the son of an iron merchant, educated at Stationers' Company School and Colchester School of Art. Exhibited Royal Academy (45), Royal Society of Portrait Painters (24), Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the New English Art Club. in 1938 he received an honoury mention at the Paris Salon and in 1954 a silver medal. In 1937 he was elected to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and became their honorary secretary. During WW1 he served with the Royal North Devon Hussars. He painted portraits of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II, and the Queen Mother. A portrait of Kathleen Ferrier, painted by Codner in 1946, is held at the National Portrait Gallery.
