Description / Expertise

Ship's Cabin Bed
Made of both mahogany and teak, this cabin bed was probably from an Ocean Liner of the turn of 1900. It was never made to be dismantled and moved quickly like a piece of naval furniture but was designed to be compact and efficient to maximize the use of space in the cabin. The large bank of seven drawers would have provided ample storage for even the heaviest laden traveller. The drawer liners are made of pine and are relatively thick. The top bed section is made as a separate section to the drawers and fixed to the base by screws. It has a shaped lift up board to the front to prevent the sleeper falling out of bed in high seas and a removable, sprung bed with replaced mattress. Although probably made in the hundreds, this cabin bed is an uncommon survivor. Circa 1900.
