Description / Expertise

The panelled back embellished with a large, flowerhead, inlaid in fruitwoods. The scroll arms with acanthus leaf carving and supported by shaped front uprights and plain at the back. The rectangular seat faced with a moulded edge and a shaped frieze below. The front with a large panelled stretcher embellished with a large flowerhead in fruitwood inlays. The straight legs joined by rectangular side and back stretchers. Repairs to losses & a break commensurate with usage. Excellent original colour and patina.

This is a rare, early example of an armchair that would have formed part of a long set which would have been positioned in the main reception room of a palazzo. The high tapering back and striking inlaid panels are very striking, and give it gravitas. It is usable and would benefit from a cushion.
