JOHN MCDONALD (1790-1820)

A George III Sugar Basket (1799 Edinburgh)

Dimensions

5.00inch high 4.25inch wide   6.65inch deep (12.70 cm high  10.79 cm wide  16.89 cm deep)

Description / Expertise

The Basket stands on an unusual stepped petal shaped foot which is decorated with bright cut and prick dot bands, as well as reeding. The panelled main body has a reeded rim and shaped reeded swing handle. The main body is also engraved with a crisp upper wide band of trailing foliate scrolls, flower heads and plain vertical ovals, all on a scratch engraved ground. Both the front and the reverse is engraved with a shield surrounded by a foliate and flower head cartouche. The cartouche contains the initial C in typical 18th century script lettering. The basket is in excellent condition and is very well marked on the foot, most interestingly with the rare Edinburgh Town mark only used 1799-1801, a very desirable and rare feature.
